Crochet basket free patterns

Forgive the re-post. Many of you liked the original blog and I made a bunch more baskets and modified for many sizes so I’m redoing the post to cover it all in one place. Efficient like an erythrocyte.

I had difficulty inventing my own basket pattern then went internet-a-huntin and found this one, so the copyright for the pattern is hers (except for Row 12, which I added).

I don’t have a #9 crochet hook, which would have given me a bigger basket, I only have a #7 which is basically what I use for all my projects. This basket used a little more than half a skein of yarn.

PATTERN

Ch 4. Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc now and throughout), 11 hdc in ring. Join. (12 hdc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around. Join. (24 hdc)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st*, repeat from * to * around. Join. (36 hdc)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next two stitches*, repeat from * to * around. Join. (48 hdc)
Rnd 5: Ch 2. Working in FRONT LOOPS ONLY, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 6. Ch 2. Working through BOTH loops, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 7: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 8-9: Repeat row 7.
Rnd 10: Ch 2, hdc in next 5 sts, ch 6, skip next 6 sts, hdc in next 18 sts, ch 6, sk next 6 sts, hdc in next 12 sts. Join.
Rnd 11: Ch 2, work hdc in each st and 6 hdc in each ch 6 space of previous round. Join, cut yarn and weave in end.

I added a Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in ea hdc around. When you get to the end of the row, rather than join, make 4 sl st, then cut yarn and weave in end. (This means that you wouldn’t join off at the end of Row 11). I thought it gave the basket a more finished edge.

LARGER BASKET PATTERN
Join. (48 hdc)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in next 2 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next three sts*, repeat from * to * around. Join (60 hdc)
Rnd 6: Ch 2. Working in FRONT LOOPS ONLY, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 7. Ch 2. Working through BOTH loops, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 8: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 9-10: Repeat row 7.
This is the handle round, different because you have 60 hdc now.
Rnd 11: Ch 2, hdc in next 12 sts, ch 6, skip next 6 sts, hdc in next 24 sts, ch 6, sk next 6 sts, hdc in next 12 sts. Join.

Rnd 12: Ch 2, work hdc in each st and 6 hdc in each ch 6 space of previous round.
Rnd 13: Sc in each hdc around. Instead of joining, do 4 sl st, cut yarn and weave in end.

THE SMALLER BASKET PATTERN
Join. (36 hdc)
Rnd 4: Ch 2. Working in FRONT LOOPS ONLY, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 5. Ch 2. Working through BOTH loops, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 6: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join.
Rnd 7-8: Repeat row 7.
Rnd 9: handle is differentCh 2, hdc in next 6 sts, ch 6, skip next 6 sts, hdc in next 12 sts, ch 6, sk next 6 sts, hdc in next 6 sts. Join.
Rnd 10: Ch 2, work hdc in each st and 6 hdc in each ch 6 space of previous round. Join, cut yarn and weave in end.
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in ea hdc around. When you get to the end of the row, rather than join, make 4 sl st, then cut yarn and weave in end.

The 2 easy ways of making the baskets bigger are:
1- use a larger yarn and crochet hook
2- do dc instead of hdc. This also means Ch 3 whenever the pattern says Ch 2.

Here are a bunch of baskets that I made and how I made them.

In case you can’t read the post it notes; they are, from left to right:
#7 hook, reg pattern but dc instead of hdc
#7 hook, large pattern with more rows; rows 5-14 before you make the handle
#7 hook, reg pattern
#4 hook, reg pattern with more rows; rows 5-18 before you make the handle
#7 hook, small pattern but with one less row; rows 5-8 before you make the handle

My son thought the middle one should be his because it’s blue.
